3 FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING A MENTOR

It has long been established that every forward thinking person with an unwavering thirst for success must have a mentor that will help him get to his desired future. Good mentors not only help shape our future; they also give us a pedestal to get the best out of life, business and other worthy pursuits.

While getting a mentor is great for success, you have to be really careful about who you choose to play the role of a mentor in your life. You have to be careful about who consistently speaks into your life. This is important because the tide of your life will flow in the direction of voice you always listen to, and the information you consistently receive.

Before choosing a mentor, you have to be discerning. You have to sit back and know which area of your life needs mentoring. A spiritual mentor is not the same as a business mentor. A voice coach is not same as writing or dancing coach. A yoga coach is not the same as a football coach. You also need to have good judgmental powers. Good judgemental powers keep you in check; they help you to know when you are being mentored in error.

Below are the three core characteristics to look out for when choosing a mentor

1. Strength of Character.

In life, as well as in business, character is a huge defining feature. Your mentor’s strength of character must be considered more important than his competence. And this character must also be greatly consistent with your own identity and purpose. Choosing a mentor whose strength of character is lower than his competence is a concocted recipe for a potential disaster.

Years back, I met a really good business consultant whose style and persona I admired. He was everything a young, hardworking and forward thinking man would love to become. He could break tough business concepts and ideas to shreds in split seconds. And his garage was cool. But the closer I got to him, the more I realized that our values and sense of purpose were not on the same level. I left.

Would I have made more money and gained more business consulting exposure with him? Sure. But my innate values would have taken a plunge. Since I didn’t want to jeopardize my future for small term benefits, I left. And that was one of the best decisions in my business life.

The character of your mentor is most important. Ignore this at your own peril.

2. Strength of Experience

Experience is what qualifies someone to be called a mentor. There is no mentor without years of experience in his pocket. The years of experience spent on learning, making mistakes and becoming successful is what gives credibility to his claims.

This doesn’t mean you have to be older than your mentor in order to be mentored effectively; it means your mentor is more experienced in the chosen field of endeavor.

3. Strength of Achievement

Your mentor must have attained in his field of endeavor. This attainment is the evidence of his experience in his area of competence.

Your mentor’s achievements are the defining manifestation that will speak for him when you mention his name. Don’t just choose a mentor based on the promise of value; choose a mentor based on the evidence of value he has created over time in different scenarios.

Subjecting your mentor to these three factors will save you from high levels of mentoring deceits and dishonesty. Understanding them will help you enjoy the many benefits of having a good mentor.

SHUT THE DOOR @I_am_ghenero

2 kings 4: 1-4(KJV)

1. Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord; and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.

2. And Elisha said unto her, what shall I do for thee? Tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, thine handmaid hath not anything in the house save a pot of oil.

3. Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

4. And when thou art come in, thou shall shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full. (Emphasis mine).

Before we get to the crux of our topic today, I would first of all take us through some vital key points in our introductory scripture.

This is a story we all know too well, but some of us might not have learnt the lessons entrenched in it. First of all, in verse two of the scripture Elisha asked the woman what hast thou in the house? This infers that, when we ask for God to bless us financially or otherwise, we need to have something readily in our hands. When scriptures says a gift of a man maketh way for him, this is precisely what it meant. You need to have something ready that God will work on and give you that which you crave for, you need to go to God with something for Him to bless.

You will agree with me that if you go before a great man with a gift no matter how small it is, he will definitely honour you when you are leaving. Proverbs 18: 16 says, a gift opens the way for the giver and ushers him into the presence of the great. (NIV). If you take a look at the men in the bible that were greatly blessed, they brought something forward that provoked the blessings they had. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are perfect examples. Ask yourself what is it I have, I want God to use as a yardstick in blessing me? Until you answer that, the blessings won’t come!

The second thing Elisha asked her, was to Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. This is because he wants her to have enough capacity to accommodate the over flow. He told her to borrow as much as she can and not a few.

You need to be prepared or have enough room (capacity) to store the blessings you are asking for. Capacity in this instance might be the right location, the right company, it might be personal development. You need to upsurge your capacity at all angles. For instance you can’t say you want to be the best in a particular field and you don’t know the newest inventions in that choice field you want to be the best, you need to find out what’s trending so you can move in that capacity so when the blessings of God comes, it will find room to stay.

You can’t also have the blessings of God when your ways are not right before him. Living in sin and still asking God for his blessing is not going to work. Scriptures says the prayers of a sinner is not acceptable to him.

The last thing he asked the woman to do after borrowing the vessels, was to shut the door. Now this is where we are going. Do you know why she needed to shut the door? It’s because there are so many distractions outside. I’m sure those she borrowed the vessels from will be very inquisitive to know why she borrowed the vessels and what she intend using them for. And those persons might have seen foolishness in what she was doing and discouraged her from going ahead with it. That was why she needed to shut the door!

In achieving your goals and getting hold of God’s blessings, there are some doors you need to shut; doors of discouragements, doors or fear, doors of hate, doors of procrastination, doors of uncertainty, doors of sin, etc. the lists goes on and on.

All these doors need to be closed so you will remain focused and not be distracted. These doors can even come in forms of friends, siblings, parents, and spouse etc. you need to shut the door against these so you can receive that which God has in store for you. The right thoughts and company matters a lot to provoke this blessing too. Psalms 1: 1 says blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. (NIV).

Monitor what goes in and out of your mind because the mind a great vessel to provoke this blessing and also a great vessel to prevent the blessings. “And Jesus said, are ye also yet without understanding? Do ye yet understand that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceeds out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornication, thefts, false witness, and blasphemies. Matthew 15;16-19(KJV).

Proverbs 4:23 also went further to say; “above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” (NIV). Shut out all negativity from your mind and see the blessing!

When you do all these, the blessings of the Lord in all area of your life is sure!

SHAKE OFF THE DUST ~ @ghenero_1

A fortnight ago, there was this precious stone in my room which I have kept for a long time which I wanted to sell so I could make some money out of it. Lo and behold, when I laid my hands on it, I quickly realised it wasn’t the same feel it was supposed to have, why? It was covered with dust! And it was looking ugly. I quickly reached out for a wiper and cleaned it and it was beautiful again as it used to be.

Just then, I became conscious of the fact that, if I had gone ahead to sell this stone just as it was; old, dirty and ugly, I may not get a buyer or better still, sold it for less due to it's current state.

Some of us are like this; “dirty looking precious stone”. We can’t maximize our full potentials because of this nature, but then, I have good news for you today.

Isaiah 52:2:

“Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion”.

You not being where you are supposed to or not being able to maximize your potentials is because there are certain things you are not doing right. God’s plan is for us to prosper above all things. He didn’t create us to be mediocre. He wants all round prosperity for us. 3 John 1:2 “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth”. So if you are living outside this, then there is a problem. Just like the dirty stone, you need to be cleaned. You need to shake off the dust that has so covered you that your beauty and potentials have been hidden by it.

God wants you to shake off the dust, he wants you to appear clean and shiny so you can be fit for the master’s use. from our opening scripture, when you shake off the dust, you don’t only become clean like the stone, but other things also happens.

One very important thing that happens is that you will arise. Isaiah 60:1 “arise, shine; for thy light is come and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.” When you rise above all, you become a light, you become a star that people will look up to, why? Because God’s glory will rest upon you. Your academics will shine, your finances will shine, your potentials will shine and God’s glory will be manifested through you.

The second thing that happens to you when you shake of the dusts, is that you come to a place where you sit down. You are a peculiar and royal person, you are to sit upon every situation and not be sat over by situations. Only when you shake off this dust you can assume this prince-nature of yours and sit on your rightful position and not walk upon the earth like a servant. When princes lose their seat or thrones they become servants to their captors. Eccl. 10:7 “I have seen servants upon horses and princes walking as servants upon the earth”. You can only avoid this when you shake off the dust.

Thirdly, when you shake off the dust, you loose yourself from captivity. You loose thyself from the bands of thy neck. God, in his majesty will go before you and break in piece all chains holding you captive. Isaiah 45:2 “I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass and cut in sunder the bars of iron”. You get free and take control of the situation because that is your true nature as a prince.

But what is this dust you need to shake off from your life for you to be able to tap into all of these promises? This dust may be habits or attitudes. How is your attitude? What has it deprived you from doing or attaining? Remember, Moses was quick to anger and he missed out from entering the Promised Land. Yours may be anger, laziness, been dirty etc. whatever it is, you need to shake it off and step forward.

This dust may be a weakness in you; do you lust, fight, steal or involve in any evil or sexual act; all these are dust that hinders one from attaining God’s promises. Is your weakness that of pride? It weakens your hold on prosperity, remember James 4:6b “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” If you are resisted by God then you can’t claim his promises.

A life swallowed in sin is another dust that needs to be taken out of your life. God wants us to be holy and righteous so we can be acceptable unto him. When we are acceptable to him, we claim his promises. Romans 12:1 “I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God which is your reasonable service”. This is what God wants from us so we can arise, shine and sit on our enemies.
